How to Install Microsoft’s Antivirus in 15 Minutes
Microsoft released its own antivirus/antispyware program free to the world in late 2009 and it’s the best one out there. There’s no registration, no subscription, no renewals, no expensive “professional” version, and doesn’t slow down your computer. This short guide will tell you how to install it, for both XP and Windows Vista/Windows 7. All clicks are SINGLE LEFT clicks unless a RIGHT click is specified. You will need an Internet connection.
Step 1: Remove your old antivirus
Windows XP: Click Start à Control Panel à double click Add/Remove Programs. Find your existing antivirus in the list (examples include AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc) and click on it. Click Change/Remove. It will ask repeatedly if you are sure – click Yes, I agree, OK, Next, Uninstall, or whatever it asks. Close all windows and restart your computer.
Windows Vista: Click Start à Control Panel à Uninstall a Program (this is near the bottom in the left column of items). Find your existing antivirus in the list (examples include AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc) and click on it. Click Uninstall. The screen will fade out and Windows will ask your permission to continue – click Continue. It will then ask repeatedly if you are sure – click Yes, I agree, OK, Next, Uninstall, or whatever it asks. Close all windows and restart your computer.
Step 2: Install Microsoft Security Essentials
This part is the same for all versions of Windows. Start Internet Explorer (the Blue ‘E’) so you can look at web sites. In the “address bar” near the top of the page, you will see the address of your home page – for example, http://www.yahoo.com. Erase the current address and type in the following one and then press the Enter key on your keyboard:
Left click on the big “Download Now” button in the middle of the page. Left click “Run.” Wait a minute for it to download. Click “Run” again. If you are running Vista, the screen will fade out and Windows will ask your permission to continue – click Continue. The installer window will now open with a picture of a blue castle. Click Next, Accept, Validate, then Install. Wait a few minutes for it to install itself. Uncheck the box that says “Scan your computer for the latest threats” and click Finish. You are done! You can close the Microsoft Security Essentials window when it pops up and updates itself. It will update itself in the background and do a scan every Sunday night.
If Microsoft Security Essentials finds a dangerous file on your computer, it will pop up a little red windows in the bottom right by the clock offering to clean it. Click “Clean my Computer.” You’re all set!
